This holiday season, we thought we would celebrate by spotlighting a few species in desperate need of saving and the fantastic organization working towards that goal. As always, we ask that you help our conservation partners, but during the season of giving we wanted to focus on a few other organizations as well. It’s our “Conservation Christmas” series!
If someone asked you to think of an animal that reminds you of Christmas, of course the first thing that might come to your mind is a reindeer. But thanks to a certain fizzy beverage manufacturer’s decades old marketing campaign, the next animal we may think of is a Polar Bear.
For me, the polar bear has always been a favorite. For as long as I can remember, the Bronx Zoo’s polar bear habitat has been an amazing place to get an up close look at these impressive animals. I recall watching them swimming and playing and never wanting to leave. So during this series of postings, I simply couldn’t go without mentioning them.
Polars Bears are listed as “threatened” by the Endagered Species Act in the United States. While their numbers may not yet be at critical levels, if things do not change they will soon be. Climate change is virtually destroying their habitat more and more every year, and unless we can stop the destruction of our polar ice caps these gorgeous bears will be a memory.
Polar Bear International is one of the conservation organizations working to save bears in the wild. They focus on field work, as well as educational and research programs. If you are a fellow polar bear fan, you really should check out their website. You can donate there and even adopt a polar bear. They also have a great online gift shop.
