The Asante are a large tribe located primarily in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Prior to colonial times, they ruled over a powerful West African empire, the Ashanti Kingdom. The king himself was referred to as the Asantehene. The tribe occupies a huge area that consists of all sorts of environments from desert, to mountain to jungle. Today, there are over 10 million of Asante descent.
An Asante traces their heritage through the female line. It is through the mother's line that property rights and titles are passed. The bronze container shown here was used by women for the finer things in life: gold dust and cosmetics.
