Construction on the new Hyena exhibit?

There is a lot of construction going on at Disney's Animal Kingdom. With Harambe Market finally opened, it appears another new food spot is opening in the old Fast Pass distribution area for Expedition Everest. This will be just grab and go - nothing fancy. And will likely be important for the Rivers of Light crowd nearby.

Also some major happenings are going on at Kilimanjaro Safaris.

Thanks to friend of the show Brian Perkins at @WDWpodreview, we have a great look at some major work being done on the safari. This is just past the baobob tree.

Its a major exhibit and almost assuredly an important aspect of the new night time version of the attraction.

I suspect what we are looking at is the hyena exhibit.

But only time will tell.

Episode 60 of Radio Harambe - True Life Adventures Feature Films

We continue our exploration of the Prehistoric DAK as we have the second part of our discussion with Josh Taylor of ModernMouseRadio.com about the feature films in the True-Life Adventures series.

Dave and Safari Mike also discuss the news from Disney’s Animal kingdom and the rest of Walt Disney World including the opening of the Harambe Market, a new pathway in Asia and Dave guesses another price. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments at jamboeveryone@gmail.com

A Photo Tour of Harambe Market

Friend of the show Brian Perkins (@WDWpodreview) was an opening day guest of Harambe Market, and was kind enough to send us a whole slew of photos.

This post is to give a look at some of the amazing details of this area.

Yes that is a Mickey Mouse. I love how its not quite right. The water tower looks great too. And, in case you were wondering, yes, maji in Swahili means water.

Here's a look at area near the water tower and train where a little market has sprung up.

And another look

As you can see, much of the seating is covered.

And more.

The ribs are sure to be popular. I would think.

Speaking of ribs, this counter has only one option. Just 1, plus a kid's option. I don't think that is enough. I would think each of the 3 counters should have 2 to 3 options.

As you can see, they are right next to each other, but do require separate queuing. Also, there are no, and I mean no, vegetarian options which seems really strange to me.

The above photo shows the entrance, To the left is what we believe will be a new shop opening in the coming months. The back of that is adjacent to Mombassa Market.

Here is a straight on look of that building. I love the look of torchlight or candlelight in the windows.

Another Animal Kingdom bike.

And there is no shortage of Animal Kingdom posters.

Again, thanks to Brian Perkins for the photos. Check his site out - the Disney Podcast Awards.

New Pathway in Asia Opens: Earlier this week a new pathway opened in the Asia section of Disney's Animal Kingdom. It leads from the entrance of Kali River Rapids around the back of the siamang exhibit and ends up on the path leading to Expedition Everest.

This new pathway was obviously built here in anticipation of some dealt bottleneck situations in this area before and during the upcoming Rivers of Light show. Also, we now know why they changed the entrance for Kali River Rapids.

A Photo for the Day: A Pool in Pangani

Along the Pangani Forest Trail, in the aviary, there is a pool.  This pool is full of cichlids. These fish comprise one of the largest group of vertebrates in the world, with somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 different species. It is believed about 1,600 species are found in Africa alone.

However, many of these freshwater fish are endangered. In Lake Victoria, more that two-thirds of the 300 endemic species (that is, species found only in Lake Victoria) are either extinct or critically endangered. That is mostly due to the introduction of the nile perch and water hyacinth which have fundamentally changed the habitat. Zoos like Disney's Animal Kingdom are trying to preserve and perhaps some day reintroduce some of these beautiful fish.

Hopefully we will have some photos soon, but for now check out Mr. Rohde’s feed for a photo.

TriceraTop Spin Closes for Quick Refurb: Folks visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom over the next week or so will not be able to ride the TriceraTop Spin in Dinoland USA. The spinner will be down for repair until May next Sunday May 24.

Aruna's Real Africa: Cheetahs in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

We had 3 cheetah sightings in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP) seeing a total of 11 cheetahs. All of the sightings were mothers with older cubs and all were special in their own way.

The second one was the one where I spotted the cheetahs lying underneath a tree in the shadow and we sat there for almost an hour with no other car there just watching them relaxing. Unfortunately it didn’t photograph well as the cheetahs were quite far off.

As we knew that they would be relaxing there for the rest of the day until it became cooler we decided to come back later in the afternoon, by that time it was a lot busier (maybe because we had told a lot of people ;). Our prediction was right and they were more active.

In fact after watching for a while a dust storm came up giving enough cover for a hunt to be attempted and the mother gave chase to a springbok. Unfortunately this happened in a dip of the riverbed so we didn’t see exactly what happened but we did see that it was not succesful.

The third cheetah sighting was on our last day as we were driving out of the park. Again a mother with cubs, four of them this time although we didn’t see them all at once as they were again in the shadow.

They were lying much closer to the road and I could have spent much longer taking photos but we still had quite a long drive (and another 2 lion sightings) to go.

The cubs lazing in the shade
Mom with one of the cubs

But the best cheetah sighting was the first one, and it definitely deserves a dedicated post...

Apparently We Can't Spell 'Warden'

It was brought to my attention by a reader and loyal listener that we had posted a photo on our Zazzle Store showing an incorrectly spelled t-shirt. Well rest assured the problem is solved and you can now get a Warden Wilson Air Rangers T-shirt that is grammatically correct!

You can now find these shirts at THIS LINK. Remember you can customize this shirt and 100% of the profits go to our conservation partners. Thank you!

Hamerkop Video - On Pangani

One of the more unusual looking birds are the hamerkops. These beautiful birds can be found at the Pangani Forest Trail. Here is one wading in the pond

Next time you are there, take a moment and check these wonderful birds out.

Disney's Animal Kingdom News Round-Up for May 6, 2015: Birds, Camels and Dancing

Celebrate Migratory Bird Day: This Saturday Disney’s Animal Kingdom will be celebrating Migratory Bird Day. According to the Disney Parks Blog, guest can “Become an “honorary bird” and “migrate” around Rafiki’s Planet Watch as you discover how your wing span and feather color (that’s bird talk for arm length and clothes) matches up among nearly 350 species of wild birds.” I recommend the rest of article as well. It has some great info about birds and the work Disney is doing to help them.

These Camels Are Arabian:  Safari Mike reported this weekend on a new show involving camels coming to Discovery Island. According to wdwmagic.com, it now appears as though these will be Arabian camels. Arabians have a single hump, as compared to the Bactrian camels which have two.

DinoLand Dance-a-Palooza Coming to an End: OrlandoParkNews.com is reporting the DinoLand Dance-a-Palooza, the character parade-dance party whatchamacallit, will be discontinued as of May 9. We have no word yet on any addition or replacement on the entertainment schedule.

Park Hours for this week are...

A Photo for Today: A Dream Job

I often get asked what job I would like to have if I ever moved to Orlando and worked at Walt Disney World. Well, this girl has just that job. I would love to spend my days working with the amazing animals of the Animal Kingdom.  Too bad I didn't think of that back when I was deciding what to study in college...

Camels? A show?

That's right. Our friends at the Orlando Parks News are reporting that there will be testing of a new "show." Apparently, this is an addition thanks to the success of Winged Encounters

The idea is that animal experts will guide camels through Africa to the Tree of Life. It does not appear to be any kind of camel ride. Instead, there will be a talk about camels in the places where they live.

Tamu Tamu turns back the clock

A couple of pieces of news came out today related to the opening of Harambe Market. First of all, you Memorial Day visitors can breathe a sigh of relief, the new area will open Friday May 22nd.

And what we predicted would come to pass has - already. The day after announcing the Harambe Market, Tamu Tamu refreshments has removed all meals from its menu. It's back to 1998, the year the park opened, when the stand sold just ice cream and soft drinks. It started serving meals (at first burgers) after the Tusker House switched from counter service to table service. It was always a little small to serve meals.

The menu continues to serve dole whips although they call them pineapple soft serve. They can add two kinds of rum. There are chocolate waffles with espresso mousse, chocolate covered espresso beans, a Mickey chocolate cookie sundae, and ice cream sandwiches. There are also beverages back.
